Lindsay Gaze sits down with Dan Boyce on the Aussie Hoopla podcast to share how the Australia Boomers program came about and shares his stories from a career that includes either playing or coaching the men’s national basketball team from it’s inception in 1960 to 1984.

Lindsay Gaze during his playing days

In what will be a two-part episode, Lindsay shares the stories of how basketball began in Australia and look at how it developed into the medal contender that it is today.

We also discuss the launch of the National Basketball League in 1979 and how it came about.

Lindsay played for Australia in three Olympic games (1960-1968) and coached the national men’s basketball team at four Olympics from 1972 to 1984. After he stepped down as coach of the national team he continued to coach in the NBL with the Melbourne Tigers, a position he held for 22 years while accepting a cent from the Melbourne Tigers to coach the team.

His coaching efforts were rewarded when he was named the NBL’s coach of the year in 1989, 1997 and 1999 and is currently the second-winningest coach in NBL history.

With son Andrew his star player, the father-son duo went on to win two championships in 1993 and 1997.

Lindsay Gaze is the only Australian to be inducted into both the FIBA Hall of Fame and the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a coach.

Topics on the show also include;

  • 1956 – Olympic Basketball reaches Melbourne (2:00)
